The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
