The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, though the lead actress manages to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
