In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
