British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
